Avira Free Antivirus is a freeware application clearly developed to demonstrate the potential effectiveness of more complex and full Avira projects. This, however, does not make it a bad antivirus in its own right. Quite contrary.

The program installs and starts with a launcher describing available modules. This is done for marketing purposes in order to show the functionality any user may have after buying extended and more complete versions of Avira products. The interface was designed in a simple red and white color scheme, with menus and tools easily available. You can set up email protection, Web activity protection or scan the system to get rid of malware. Scanning is easy to start and control with various profiles, such as full scan, quick scan and scans of specific drives. You can schedule scanning sessions for specific times, as well as use the default setting of repeated quick scan every 168 hours.

Due to the free status of the product, additional features are few, yet they still have their uses. There is no firewall, but Avira Free Antivirus has a built-in front-end to the standard Windows firewall. It also has a trial version of System Speedup app available in paid Avira products. It looks at junk files, possible registry and privacy issues in the system and tries to fix them.
Overall, I found Avira Free Antivirus to be competent, fast and light. It may not be a monster of functionality, but what it does, it does well.
